School of Visual Arts Brings Together 15 Alumni Artists in “Wavelengths”
Curated by an anonymous jury of notable alumni
School of Visual Arts (SVA), this fall, will unite 15 alumni artists for “Wavelengths,” a juried exhibition that spans seven different undergraduate and graduate degree programs and an array of mediums, selected anonymously by a distinguished panel of fellow alumni. A collaboration between SVA Galleries and Alumni Affairs, “Wavelengths” will be on view Tuesday, September 2 through Saturday, December 6, 2025, at the SVA Chelsea Gallery, 601 West 26th Street, 15th floor, New York City. A public reception will be held at the gallery on Thursday, September 4, 2025, 6:00 to 8:00pm.
While the artists in “Wavelengths” differ greatly, their history with SVA ties them together. While this influence may not seem obvious on the surface, their time at the College has undoubtedly impacted their practices, from how they’ve nurtured their craft to their commitment to planting roots in New York City. The post-graduation paths of these 15 artists may have diverged after graduation, but “Wavelengths” reconnects them through their shared experience as alumni, presenting an opportunity for a return to their roots as artists.
Selected from nearly 100 entries amid a call for submissions, the 15 artists of “Wavelengths” all graduated from SVA between 2010 and 2020, and maintain a studio practice based in New York City. Across a range of materials and concepts, the work on view takes particular interest in process-based practices and pursuing joy amidst adversity. From drawing to painting, sculpture to new and mixed media, the exhibition demonstrates the breadth and variety of SVA’s diverse alumni network.
“SVA Galleries serve as a unique and vital space for the entire SVA community to exchange ideas, explore new perspectives, and celebrate creative excellence,” said Tyson Skross, director, SVA Galleries. “Through ‘Wavelengths,’ SVA Alumni Affairs and SVA Galleries are proud to spotlight the achievements of our alumni and create opportunities for them to bring their real-world experience back to campus, enriching the community they helped shape.”
Gabrielle Benak (BFA 2019 Fine Arts) uses vivid watercolors to explore themes of adornment and preservation through a process of intuition and ritual. Paul Rho (BFA 2019 Photography and Video) uses the traditional materials of photography—paper, film, and light-sensitive chemicals—as physical and conceptual armatures for sculptural and interdisciplinary works. Christine Stiver (MFA 2017 Art Practice) creates paper-based sculptures using stick armatures, torn bits of neglected drawings, carefully prepared papers, and other sundry fragments, each form a miniature architecture devoted to the aesthetics of a singular sound. Illustrator ShinYeon Moon (MFA 2017 Illustration as Visual Essay)—whose practice includes wood-whittling, creating needle-felted characters, and painting murals—creates vibrant, unique characters and compelling, dynamic illustrations that pay homage to her Korean-American heritage, her love of food and crafts, and storytelling. And Georgia Lale (MFA 2016 Fine Arts) explores the body’s blueprint within society’s social and political realms, advocating for accessible healthcare and gender equality, and questioning common taboos and structural inequities through physical performances and mixed media.
“Wavelengths” also includes work from Alex Cassetti (BFA 2016 Photography and Video), Sophy Chang (BFA 2019 Fine Arts), Jeong Hur (MFA 2020 Photography, Video & Related Media), Ray Hwang (BFA 2016 Illustration), Victor Liu (MFA 2014 Art Practice), Jing Lin (MFA 2018 Photography, Video & Related Media), Ivy Johnson (BFA 2018 Illustration), Francena Poyo-Ottley (BFA 2019 Photography and Video), Vanessa Powers (BFA 2013 Fine Arts), and Carra Seals (MFA 2020 Fine Arts).
