Lens and Screen Arts Residency: From Generative AI to the Darkroom
Hosted by the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department at the School of Visual Arts (SVA), this international studio residency offers lens-based artists the time, facilities, and support to advance their creative practice in the lens and screen arts. Designed for artists working across traditional and emerging forms-including still image, moving image, installation, and AI-driven practices-the residency fosters experimentation, dialogue, and critical engagement with the contemporary landscape of lens-based art.
Participants will benefit from workshops, critiques, and seminar-style discussions that connect making with thinking, while also enjoying full access to state-of-the-art digital facilities. These include video editing suites, a fully equipped shooting studio, large-format Epson printers, and film and flatbed scanners. Technical staff is available for support. All participants have access to a shared studio space and 24-hour access to the department's facilities during their residency. Studio time will be enriched with field trips to New York City's cultural institutions, providing additional opportunities for inspiration and connection. Limited wet-studios are available upon request.
This residency is ideal for artists looking to expand and re-engage with their practice as well as those considering graduate study. We welcome artists of all backgrounds, and we are committed to fostering an inclusive, international community of makers and thinkers. We offer a space to reconnect with contemporary discourse while immersing oneself in New York City's vibrant, lens-based art scene.
