Artist Residency Programs

Visual and Critical Studies Residency: Art as Political Practice
This residency is an intensive program that explores the intersection of art, politics, and social engagement through theory and practice. Designed for artists, writers, and interdisciplinary thinkers, the residency combines seminars, workshops, studio practice, and public presentations to foster critical dialogue and creative experimentation.
Each week focuses on a theme, introduced through theoretical texts in the weekly seminar. Participants then work closely with faculty, visiting artists, and scholars in hands-on workshops, and group and individual critiques to develop their ideas in relation to the theory. Residents have access to SVA's printmaking and digital studios, and are encouraged to develop independent projects that respond to contemporary political and social conditions. Theory seminars provide a framework for understanding how art operates within structures of power, activism, and representation, while open studio time allows for deep, sustained making. The residency culminates in a public exhibition in the Flatiron Project Space and performance event(s) that extend into the streets of New York City, offering participants the opportunity to share their work and engage directly with audiences.
Bringing together emerging and established practitioners, this residency fosters a community of inquiry where creative practice becomes a form of political thought and collective action. Note: A portfolio is required for review and acceptance to this program.
