This program combines drawing and studying art history to explore and understand the extraordinary South of France. We will investigate the grandeur of Provence, its ancient Roman, Romanesque, and Gothic monuments by visiting the museums, sites, and towns for which the region is famous. Historic Avignon, where we will be based-with its daily markets, museums, and magnificent Popes' Palace-will be our "studio." With excursions to nearby villages as well as the examination of the lives and works of artists, particularly Van Gogh and Cézanne, participants will be immersed in the culture of the region. We will visit Arles, where Van Gogh's "Yellow House" once stood, and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, where he painted "Starry Night." In Aix-en-Provence we will sketch in Cézanne's studio. The museums and monuments of the town of Nimes and the castle of Tarascon will also serve as sites for extensive drawing.

This program will focus on how art history can be a source of inspiration for contemporary art practices, and drawing as a key to artistic growth.

Tuition includes: Double-occupancy hotel accommodations (single rooms available at a higher cost), daily Continental breakfast, welcome and farewell dinners, one group lunch, French lesson, all site and museum entrances, and all transportation costs to and from program sites.
