Art Therapy in a Forensic Setting: Rikers Island

This lecture by Creative Art Therapy Coordinator Lesley Achitoff (LCAT,ATR-BC) will present examples of work by women and adolescent boys during group workshops on Rikers Island. Achitoff will discuss the creative and diagnostic process of the work produced in these groups, which commonly focuses on the inmates' emotional responses to their lack of contact with family.


Achitoff has been working with at-risk and court-involved youth since 2003 as an Art Therapist for HeartShare Human Services, the Center for Alternative Sentencing and Employment Services (CASES), and as a Creative Art Therapy Coordinator on Rikers Island. Lesley also facilitates a group for court-involved youth associated with Good Shepherd Services under the auspices of Art Therapy Outreach Center (ATOC).
