SVA presents two concurrent exhibitions featuring the work of BFA Fine Arts students and alumni: “Video Now” and “Mindscapes in Painting.” The exhibitions will be on view Wednesday, October 4, through Saturday, October 25, at the SVA Flatiron Gallery, 133/141 West 21st Street, New York City.
Curated by Joseph Tekippe, “Video Now” celebrates the diverse perspectives and rigorous experimentation occurring within the genre of the moving image, including performance art, dance, documentary, memoir, immersive CGI environments, data visualization, and stop-motion animation. Featured artists include Sofia Brummitt, Danny Cappello, Valentina Castro, Ming Yuen William Cheng, Autumn de Forest, Michael Fried, Raj Gupta, Maho Kanasashi, Yishu Li, Puhan Li, Christine Lin, Rose McElroy, Kylie Rah, Pluto Schnirring, Layla Mesa, Anna St. Lawrence, and Nihan Xie.
Reflecting the broad range within contemporary painting, “Mindscapes in Painting” is co-curated by BFA Fine Arts chair Suzanne Anker and Director of Operations and faculty Sam Sherman, and includes landscape, portraiture, abstraction, and surrealist imagery. The artists draw diverse references from folktales to Hello Kitty, showcasing the role of the artist as cultural remixer. Painting has become a vast arena where fragments of daily life and culture collide in unexpected ways. Featured artists include Sarah Benmoha, Sydney Brill, Cannon Koen, Ziyan Mei, Bryana Melgar, Devon Morgan, Sarah Tinsley, and Vivi Walsh.
