BFA Visual & Critical Studies and the Flatiron Project Space present “Skid Row,” photographs by MFA Photography, Video and Related Media chair Charles Traub. The exhibition of large scale portraits—all taken in the late 1970’s—of denizens of the “Skid Row” neighborhoods of New York and Chicago poignantly capture the complex humanity of the subjects. This exhibition coincides with the recent publication of this body of work by Lazy Dog Press; the “Skid Row” monograph includes an essay by BFA Visual & Critical Studies Chair Tom Huhn, who writes:

“If the portrayed face acts as a vehicle for the viewer's composition of whatever holds together the many bits of the world, then Charles Traub’s portraits provide not so much reassurance that the world and our experience form a unity as they rather convey how tentative and tenuous it is.”

Charles Traub is Chair of MFA Photography and Video at the School of Visual Arts. With a prestigious career that spans over 50 years, Traub has extensively exhibited and published his work, which can be found in numerous museums, public and private collections world-wide. There will be a reception and book signing by Charles Traub and Tom Huhn at the gallery on Thursday, September 28, 6:00 – 8:00pm.

This exhibition has been curated by BFA Visual & Critical Studies faculty member Peter Hristoff (BFA 1981 Fine Arts).

  • The Flatiron Project Space, founded and run by BFA Visual & Critical Studies (BFA VCS), is located on the ground floor of 133/141 West 21st Street. The gallery plays an important role in the VCS program, providing students with real-world experiences in the curation, installation and management of a gallery.

The gallery’s yearly programming invites VCS students and guest curators, along with other departments at SVA, to realize curatorial projects that highlight our rapidly expanding visual culture. Shows are held monthly and include video, performance, painting and sculptural projects.

The gallery is open Monday through Sunday, 9:00am – 6:00pm.
