Community Lecture Series: Fields Within the Field

MPS Art Therapy presents a virtual presentation by Michael Franklin, Ph.D., ATR-BC, on the intersections between the studio model and social justice art therapy, specifically non-clinical methods and interventions for people in need of communal expression. This philosophical terrain where art offers therapeutic benefits without focusing on clinical interventions such as case conceptualization, assessment and treatment planning will be addressed. Finally, the Naropa Community Art Studio (NCAS) offers a successful example of the blended roles and applications of community art therapy.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants with be able to identify and define three intersectional connections between community-based art therapy and social justice art therapy.
- Participants will be able to identify three aspects of the territory where art is therapeutic without crossing over into clinical methods and applications.
- Participants will be able to name and understand three basic principles of karma yoga related to social engagement and the development of a community art studio.
