Mental health practitioners are responsible for maintaining professional boundaries and relationships in clinical practice. While some boundary violations may be easy to identify, this training is designed to explore the nuanced boundary questions clinicians face across their professional careers. Participants will be invited to examine the diverse, contextual factors related to self, their clients, and treatment that impact the management of boundaries in clinical practice.

This training will guide attendees through both the “person-of-the-therapist” and ethical decision-making frameworks, which can be applied to a range of professional boundary questions. Participants will be provided practical strategies for both the prevention and remediation of boundary issues, helping clinicians increase awareness of potential vulnerabilities and methods for intentionality. Finally, attendees will have the opportunity to review their own clinical practice and apply the material to practical management efforts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Increase understanding of “person-of-the-therapist” and its intersection with professional boundaries
  2. Define and differentiate between professional boundaries, boundary crossings, and boundary violations
  3. Increase confidence in utilizing an ethical decision-making framework when faced with professional boundary questions
  4. Describe at least 1 remediation and 1 prevention strategy to mitigate professional boundary risks
