Community Lecture Series: The Rituals of Supervision


In this virtual lecture presented by MPS Art Therapy, faculty members Robert Grant, ATR-BC, ATCS, LCAT, and Eileen McGann, ATR-BC, LCAT, will engage in a conversation focusing on the nature, complexities and relational space that is needed in supervision. The conversation will also focus on the rituals established to facilitate growth, change and how to sustain this process in one's professional development.
Learning Objectives:
1. What is supervision?
2. Looking at what the supervisory space is and how to define it.
3. Looking at what the supervisory relationship is.
4. Navigating the clinical space through rituals to foster growth.
5. How to nurture a professional/clinical lens that enables an Art Therapist to nurture their space.
Speaker Bios:
Robert Abel Grant, ATR-BC, ATCS, LCAT (Presenter)
Robert Abel Grant received his Master in Professional Studies in Art Therapy and Creativity Development from Pratt Institute. Robert has been a practicing Art Therapist with 30 years’ experience working and supervising the work with children and families.
Robert is currently the Associate Clinic Director of HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services Mental Health Outpatient Treatment and Rehabilitative Services, an Article 31 Outpatient Mental Health Clinic providing Clinical Supervision to therapists and their Graduate Level interns. Robert is also a Clinical Supervisor for HeartShare St. Vincent’s Services Creative Solutions Program – a program providing free Art Therapy Services for persons in Coney Island and the Creative Coordinator for the HeART Studio, a non-clinical art therapy space that seeks to enrich the lives of individuals served by HSVS through freedom of expression and building supportive communities by using art making. Robert is an instructor and a Faculty Supervisor at the SVA MPS Art Therapy Program teaching Internship/ Supervision in the Studio, Family Art Therapy and providing a Licensing workshop to Graduating Students on NYSOP Guidelines and ATCB Guidelines.
Eileen McGann, ATR-BC, LCAT (Facilitator)
With over three decades as a practicing clinician, consultant, supervisor and in program development, Eileen McGann continues to publish and present both nationally and internationally on her work with youth and the impact of trauma and art therapy. Ms. McGann developed and is the Director of the Arts and Creative Therapies program at Mercy First and organized the first art therapy exhibition inside the United Nations. She has served on the Editorial Board of Art Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, is a lecturer at many colleges and universities and is a long standing faculty member within the MPS Art Therapy program at the School of Visual Arts.
The MPS Art Therapy Department at the School of Visual Arts is recognized by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Mental Health Practitioners as an approved provider of continuing education for licensed creative arts therapists. #CAT-0054.
