BFA Visual and Critical Studies presents “Evening Star,” an art exhibition with an immersive socially-engaged wellness component rooted in matrifocal spiritual ecology and feminine folk wisdom. Curated by BFA Visual and Critical Studies and Art History faculty member Katie Cercone, the exhibition will be on view from Sunday, February 22, through Thursday, March 19, in the Flatiron Project Space at 133 West 21 Street, New York, NY.

Invoking shared cultural memory stirring the colloquial imaginary around the themes of folk and neo-folk practices and aesthetics, archetypal memory, stars, magic, and wisdom of ancestors, “Evening Star” centers female energy as limitless, open-ended creative potential. “Evening Star” explores folk traditions evidenced in contemporary hybrid format—among the terrain we find matrifocal storytelling, folklore, herbalism, music and dance cultures, yoga and ayurveda.

Artists featured in this exhibition include Damali Abrams, Nancy Azara, Fran Flaherty, Bri Frei, Elisa Garcia de la Huerta, Marcia Jones, Adehla Lee, Jodie Lyn-kee-chow, Qinza Najm, Fanny Perez, Kay Turner, and selected students from Cercone’s course, Gender Trouble. With additional programming by Moon Lab, led by Sal Chen, Fanny Perez and Juliet Rania.

  • The Flatiron Project Space, founded and run by BFA Visual & Critical Studies, is located on the ground floor of 133 West 21 Street. The gallery invites students, faculty, and industry experts to collaborate on exhibitions and other projects that highlight our rapidly expanding visual culture. Shows are held monthly and include video, performance, painting and sculptural projects.

The gallery is open Monday through Sunday, 9 AM to 6 PM. It is fully accessible by wheelchair.
