MA Curatorial Practice presents “Inter/Seen,” curated by student Chaieun Lee. The exhibition focuses on marginalized communities, considering the intersection between how the world looks at artists from these communities and how artists, in turn, see the world through their distinct perspectives. “Inter/Seen” presents works that extend beyond human communities, exploring beings that have long been marginalized and addressing a broader sense of unseen existence.

Mina Kim’s installation transforms the sorrows she has experienced as both a woman and an immigrant into art through the lens of Eastern meditation. Zengyuan Ma’s sculpture symbolizes the passage she had to go through to be reborn as both a woman and an immigrant in New York. Rodrigo Moreira’s video work, composed of re-edited scenes from classic films, visualizes the censorship and oppression historically imposed on queer bodies and narratives. Minjee Kim explores beings that have long been excluded from human history, focusing on nonhuman beings and bringing their presence into a space of discussion. Yujin Hur uses pigments extracted from discarded natural materials to transform her own sense of isolation within society in a time-based installation.

The artists have continually been defined and seen through the gaze of others. At times, they have experienced exclusion because of their identities. Of course, such experiences are not limited to minorities alone; at certain moments in life, everyone has found themselves in the margins.“Inter/Seen” seeks to create a space where those experiences can be shared and respected, encouraging empathy for others who have been unseen.
