This specific work is a fictional construction of the jazz musician Charles Jeffers, who was born and raised in North Carolina and found himself at the center of New York City’s jazz movement during the 1970s. He played and lived among a group of musicians at 113 E Centre Street, Apt 327, in downtown Manhattan. I’ve created a fictional archive to memorialize Jeffers’ life. Utilizing my family’s archive and stories and applying them to Jeffers’ life, then mixing that with different mediums such as printmaking, photography, and text further pushed the believability that Jeffers existed.

Mentor: Michael Famighetti, Editor, Aperture Magazine

My time as Micheal’s mentee was productive and insightful. With his help, I was able to come at my work from newer and different perspectives. All while maintaining my voice and hand in the work.
