Through the Open Door

Through the Open Door is a series of stylized, whimsical self-portraits that explore the dramatic effects of China’s recent societal changes on members of his own generation. It illustrates both the influx of Western products and ideas caused by increased economic freedom and access to the Internet and the academic pressure placed on his peers by China’s one-child policy. Xie’s project has allowed him to understand how such a personal experience could also be deeply political and social.
