Peking Opera

Peking Opera is one of the great forms of traditional art in China, dating back hundreds of years and even surviving the Cultural Revolution’s attempt to dismantle such historic institutions. Shen grew up in Beijing, where the opera first took root, and its performances occupy a large part of her childhood memory. The photographs in Peking Opera interpret this age-old theatrical art form with still lives and gestures in an abstract symbolic language, as a gift to younger generations.
