The Osiris
Danielle Peters
I realized I really enjoyed creating and developing environments halfway through my junior year at SVA. This came as a relief to me because prior to that, I had been dipping my toes into every part of the production pipeline with the goal of figuring out what I really wanted to do in mind. So when I had that realization, I decided to make a thesis film based solely around my interests and strengths.
My short film, The Osiris, is a suspense-thriller that takes place in an old apartment building. Within the building, two families live on separate floors and, although their lives may seem different from one another, they discover that they share more than just the building where they reside. No characters are directly shown, so we learn about them through the various shots of their apartments and from the narrator, who reflects on their lives. This story plays on the themes of life and death, so it provided a streamlined opportunity for me to experiment with my interest in ancient mythology. I named the film and the building after the ancient Egyptian god, Osiris, who is responsible for everything concerning life, the dead, the afterlife, and resurrection- amongst other things. Additionally, I used the ouroboros—an ancient symbol of a snake eating its own tail, signifying infinity and the cycle of birth and death—as a crest for the building to further push the existing themes of my short film. A culmination of both my professional and personal interests, The Osiris is something that I am excited to share with as many people as possible.
