Bon Appetite
Seungjoon An, Jiwon Kang, and Minjae Kim
Joon, director of Bon Appetit, wanted to be a chef when he was young. He had a belief in the power of well-made food. It heals people's weary souls from their life’s burdens. Joon is now a VFX artist, and he wishes to create artwork that manifests meaningful cooking and the beauty of food. Our team's goal was to create an art piece that is not just a beautiful VFX film but one that touches people's feelings.
Since the restaurant is the main location of our film, we visited a lot of kitchen studios for our production. The time of the story is around 3 AM to 7 AM, so we wanted to use a restaurant without any letting in sunlight. We also tried to find a large space because we wanted our 3D objects, the kitchenettes, to fly around the studio without any restrictions. In order to make a warm tone and solemn mood, we limited the number of lights.
The most challenging work was the set design and decorating the stage to look like a real restaurant. Our team wanted to present our kitchen set up to be an authentic-looking restaurant. We bought food, kitchen tools, and jars with cooking ingredients and put them on the kitchen shelf. When the vegetables looked withered or bad, we switched to fresh vegetables to match their condition from the previous scene.
