BFA Visual and Critical Studies presents “Sublunar,” an exhibition of large-scale drawings by faculty member Taney Roniger (BFA 1992 Fine Arts). The exhibition will be on view from Monday, August 18, through Wednesday, September 24, at the Flatiron Project Space, 133 W 21 Street, New York, NY.

Inspired by the new non-mechanistic materialism emerging in the sciences and humanities, “Sublunar” explores the living presence of the natural world. With subtly glowing fields made with charcoal and graphite, the drawings conjure atmospheric phenomena in which light and shadow are material actors. Often invoking the horizon, the works address the body of the viewer, awakening innate memories of our species’ earliest home. In pointing to the vitality of our earthly environment, the drawings suggest a this-worldly spirituality–one that locates the spiritual not in some other realm but in the here and now of our sublunary world.

A writer as well as a visual artist, Taney Roniger has taught in the Fine Arts department at SVA since 2007 and the Honors Program since 2011. In all of her work she advocates for a collective shift in consciousness away from the illusion of human separateness and toward the reality of ecological interbeing.

  • The Flatiron Project Space, founded and run by BFA Visual & Critical Studies, is located on the ground floor of 133 West 21 Street. The gallery invites students, faculty, and industry experts to collaborate on exhibitions and other projects that highlight our rapidly expanding visual culture. Shows are held monthly and include video, performance, painting and sculptural projects.

The gallery is open Monday through Sunday, 9 AM to 6 PM. It is fully accessible by wheelchair.
