Pigeons of the City

test
Share

This project explores the connection between people, pigeons, and the city. We humans share this space with plants and animals, whose presence adds diversity and vitality to urban life. One of the most prominent species we co-habitate with is the pigeon. The millions of pigeons living in New York City have become an integral part of the scenery along our avenues and streets.

Zhang first became interested in pigeons when walking along the docks bordering Manhattan, and finding herself amongst flocks of these birds. By observing and recording them carefully, she noticed many interesting behaviors: their interspecies interactions; how they take flight en masse; their instinct of domesticated fearlessness while navigating the ecosystem of the city. Pigeons are everywhere, and they have an intricate relationship with New York City that is worth noticing.
