Workshop

This complementary Drawing Marathon session offered by SVA Continuing Education (SVACE) and BFA Visual & Critical Studies encourages participants to work in a free and expressive manner, with the goal of each participant to create approximately 100 drawings in three hours. 

Led by visual artist and SVA faculty member Peter Hristoff (BFA 1981 Fine Arts), the session combines approaches that Hristoff has developed in his online drawing courses to liberate both the novice and the professional artist from self-imposed constraints. The goal of this evening is to draw freely and loosely while maintaining an open attitude. Participants will work from creative prompts, as well as models and historical art references. This event will offer the opportunity to sample exercises from various SVACE courses taught by Hristoff.

Open to all levels of drawing experience. Please note: most drawings are timed at approximately one minute.

Required supplies:

-Loose sheets of paper (approximately 100 sheets); a package of white 8.5x11” or 11x14” cardstock or better quality (heavier) photocopy paper works well. In the past, students have also used Canson brand “XL” multi-media paper. A sketchbook can work, but not if you’re using ink.

-Any drawing media that creates a smooth, soft line. Recommended: 4, 5 or 6B pencils,

soft Blackwing pencils, Ebony pencils, Lyra brand water-soluble graphite crayon in 6 or 9B, 

brush and ink.

-Feel free to use color (pencils, pastels, etc.)

Peter Hristoff is a visual artist working in painting, printmaking, drawing and rug making. Recent exhibition venues have included CAM Gallery Istanbul, MoMA, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Duke House NYU, The Hammond Museum, Artists Equity Gallery and The Flatiron Project Space of SVA. Hristoff was selected as the first visual artist-in-residence at The Met in 2015/16, with his tenure culminating in a collaborative project with the museum’s Education Department and weavers in Aegean Turkey. Hristoff is a BFA faculty member at his alma mater, The School of Visual Arts, NY.
