Artist Statement:
I try to paint things that ask me (or tell me) to paint them. They can be actual things, but are often related to something or someone in the past, to a stray thought, or to an idea that has bubbled up during a wakeful moment. Sometimes, the idea insists on being heard; sometimes, especially if it comes from long ago. It may say that, since I haven’t forgotten it, I might as well use it.
When I start a painting, I’m usually not sure of the finished structure. If things go well, when I’m partway through, the painting begins to speak—offering suggestions about possible avenues, and complaints about some parts of the canvas. With luck, it eventually says “Okay, take a break for a few days and look again. If it still looks okay, you might be done.”
