The spring 2024 semester has wrapped up, but SVA’s gallery spaces are warming up for the summer months with everything from thesis work to juried shows and exhibitions of work by artist residents and Continuing Education students. Plus, this month will also see two separate exhibitions with work by SVA staff! MPS Digital Photography will keep its excellent i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration lecture series going, too, with two talks from visiting artists in June.

EXHIBITIONS
MPS Fashion Photography presents an exhibition of work by alumni from the classes of 2023 and 2024. In this year’s show, students explore a number of diverse and relevant themes such as life in the wake of a global pandemic, developments in technology, human identity, relationships and the role of fashion as a mirror of time and place.
Through Tuesday, June 4 | 2024 Animation Celebration Exhibition | SVA Flatiron Windows
An exhibition of posters for corresponding short films created by students in the BFA Animation class of 2024. Each year, the exhibition showcases the creativity of BFA Animation graduates who are about to embark on their careers beyond SVA. This year’s thesis films and posters explore themes such as self-acceptance, relationship woes, extraordinary creatures and many others.
Through Monday, June 3 | “What Casts a Shadow” | SVA Gramercy Gallery
An exhibition of ceramics, drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture and video by SVA students selected by a jury of their peers. Exploring the connections between individuals and their environments, and the ramifications of change, both positive and negative, the work on view represents “process” as an ongoing creative endeavor. Actively grappling with their subject matter as it intersects with their lived experiences, the artists delve into the frictions inherent to evolution. Calling upon varied points of influence—pop culture, spiritual teachings and familial structures—their respective works incorporate personal histories while considering the next steps in the here and now.
Tuesday, June 4 – Sunday, June 16 | “Office Space” | SVA Flatiron Project Space
SVA Continuing Education presents its first-ever staff exhibition, featuring the work of current department staff members Rachel Gisela Cohen, Catherine Guzman, Nivia Hernandez, Stephanie McGovern (MFA 2022 Fine Arts) and Calley Nelson.
Adam Cable, Another Path, 2022, inkjet prints, resin, wood and vinyl, 18 x 14 x 2 inches. On view at the All-Staff Art Show 2024.

Through Wednesday, June 5 | “Traces: Memory, Nature and the Body” | SVA Flatiron Gallery
A group exhibition featuring the work of five artists and alumni of SVA’s Artist Residency programs. Each artist presents a unique perspective on the intersection of humanity and nature, shedding light on the ways in which actions, emotions and memories intertwine with the natural world. Through a variety of mediums and artistic approaches, they explore themes such as environmental degradation, conservation, spirituality, memorialization and the intrinsic connection between humans and their surroundings.
An exhibition of select thesis projects by more than 20 students from the MFA Computer Arts class of 2024, curated by Pablo Guardiola, co-director at Beta Local, and senior systems administrator for the department José Vargas (MFA 2013 Computer Art). The showcased projects serve as compelling evidence of tools harnessed to convey significant content. Within this exhibition, myriad approaches to narrative, design, research and installation converge, offering the viewer a wide range of art projects under the category of computer arts. Like all exceptional art, these works operate according to their own internal logic; they are more than just technical demonstrations, they possess a distinct power and autonomy.
Through Monday, June 17 | “Metamorphosis” | Online
SVA Continuing Education and Artist Residency Programs present an exhibition that brings together 16 artists from diverse backgrounds to showcase a variety of subjects and media.
