September at SVA kicks off more than just a new school year. It also welcomes the highly anticipated return of the Masters Series exhibition, with a career retrospective of work by acclaimed photojournalist Lynsey Addario; a new slate of lectures from MPS Digital Photography’s i3: Images, Ideas, Inspiration series; as well as various workshops and talks. Two film festivals, After School Special and MFA Social Documentary Film’s thesis showcase, will take place this month, as well as a special exhibition about the history of stickers as an artistic medium and a milestone exhibition from SVA’s own Bio Art Lab

EXHIBITIONS

Through Monday, September 19 | “Dwelling in Motion” | SVA Flatiron Gallery

A juried exhibition of multidisciplinary work by SVA students, “Dwelling in Motion” analyzes the constantly growing relationship between habitat and inhabitant. In the same way that someone occupies a room or lives in a community, internal entities also reside in our lives, including our personalities and identities. These facets of oneself change and mature over time, creating unique structures that give form to knowledge and emotions. The 10 artists in this exhibition use various media, including textiles, painting, photography, and sculpture. Connecting the bodies, societies, and spaces we live within, these works portray the memories, disorders, and ideals that inspire and shape our experiences.

Through Monday, September 19 | "The Health Poster Project" | SVA Gramercy Gallery

An exhibition of posters by 24 students from BFA Illustration, MFA Illustration as Visual Essay, and the 2022 Summer Illustration Residency, curated by BFA Illustration and BFA Comics Chair Viktor Koen. From practical to esoteric, this series of posters tries to understand the norms, complexities, and implications of a fundamental human right on the heels of a relentless global pandemic. Often antithetical messaging and interpretations hindered our efforts to discuss with some depth of perspective how the pandemic redefined the most crucial aspect of our lives: physical and mental health, on the individual and collective levels. This exhibition provides a rare cross-section of undergraduate, graduate, and continuing education projects where students share a common theme: research and a quote about health expressed in poster format. The result is a collection of compositions that inform and delight.

Through Monday, September 19 | MPS Fashion Photography Class of 2022 | SVA Gramercy Gallery

An exhibition of artworks by the MPS Fashion Photography class of 2022.

Through Thursday, September 29 | “A Sticker History Exhibition: A Snapshot from 100 Years of Design Told Through Adhesive Materials” | SVA Flatiron Project Space

Curated by DB Burkeman and Stuck-Up in partnership with BFA Visual & Critical Studies, this collection spans over 100 years, giving this medium and its creators the permanence and prominence they deserve. For the art world and beyond, “A Sticker History Exhibition” opens a direct window into the subversive counterculture movements and commercial influences from which these adhesive works of art were born. Notable names in the exhibition include Andy Warhol, BANKSY, Jim Shaw, Shepard Fairey, and more.
