In this month’s edition of The Five, we spotlight SVA community members whose exceptional work is featured across business, industry, and international media outlets. From emerging creatives to innovative products, here’s a roundup of the latest news from faculty, students, and alumni, including mentions in Business Insider, PetaPixel, and BusinessMirror.
1. MFA Photography, Video, and Related Media student Mosab Abushama spoke with PetaPixel about his work documenting the ongoing civil war in Sudan. “As a Sudanese and a photographer, navigating this new reality poses profound challenges. What is life like for people amidst the war? How do they cope, and how has the conflict altered the very fabric of their existence? The present shapes our future, yet many stories and events remain untold and unreachable due to the perilous circumstances,” said Abushama.
2. Joe Hollier (BFA 2012 Graphic Design) was featured in Business Insider for his Light Phone product. This simple mobile device allows for texts and calls but doesn’t provide email or social media access. “The whole value is in it not distracting you, but giving you the peace of mind that if there’s an emergency, you have a phone,” said Hollier.
3. “I still use photography in the same way: to get access to people, communities, and lifestyles. Photography is the only thing I can’t scratch the itch with,” SVA faculty member Caroline Tompkins (BFA 2014 Photography) told The Creative Independent. The more I learn, the less I know.” Tompkins was interviewed by the Kickstarter-published newsletter, where she spoke about her time at SVA, balancing personal work and commercial jobs, and her career path.

4. Timed to her “All Day All Night” exhibition at The Whitney through July 6, Christine Sun Kim (MFA 2006 Fine Arts) spoke with The Cut about her creative process, navigating Deaf identity, and breaking out of conceptual echo chambers. “Before one can break through or out of the echo chamber, you must almost go through a 12-step program, if you will. It takes a lot more energy to recognize this is an issue and then do things differently,” said Kim.
5. “As I approach graduation after four years of studying animation, I wanted to honor that journey—and the growth that came with it—by putting together this exhibit,” Meryl Chan (BFA 2025 Animation) told BusinessMirror, a daily newspaper in the Philippines. Chan spoke about being drawn to animation, the animation program at SVA, and how she plans to continue developing her portfolio to pursue a career within the industry. Bonus coincidence: the BusinessMirror article art was created by alumnus Jenny Chang-Rodriguez (BFA 2013 Illustration).
