The start of the 2025-2026 school year marks the grand opening of the Carin Goldberg Faculty Library, in memory of the longtime BFA Design instructor who touched many lives as a design legend and educator. Even if you never had the privilege of meeting Carin, “you have a Carin Goldberg book cover in your library or a Carin Goldberg album cover in your record collection,” promises Michael Beirut; a library seemed the most fitting way to honor her prolific legacy and enduring influence.
Over the last two years, we’ve built the Library in room 211 (next to the intern room in the main building) with generous donations from Steven Heller, Stephen Doyle, Gael Towey, and alumni, faculty, and friends of the department. We’re excited to see this labor of love come to life thanks to you, faculty, as you enjoy this instructor-only space to learn, to meet, and to simply take a break in a cozy, private nook just for you.
What can I borrow?
With over 500 books (and counting) organized in categories from Publishing to Advertising to Visual Culture, borrow choice texts including Letters from M/M (Paris), 1,000 Marks by Pentagram, Punk 45: The Singles Cover Art of Punk 1976-80, Studio Job: The Book of Job, and Félix Beltrán: Visual Intelligence.
The Library is also well-stocked with DVDs and a portable player for in-class screenings of titles like Milton Glaser: To Inform & Delight, Helvetica: A Documentary by Gary Hustwit, Design is One: Lela & Massimo Vignelli, and Proceed and Be Bold: The Life of Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr.
We’ll soon receive archival copies of Deb Bishop’s New York Times for Kids, but in the meantime, borrow new and “vintage” copies of magazines, including Raygun, Harper’s Bazaar, Eye, PRINT, Monocle, Esopus, and Fortune.

Just 18 of the 500+ books available to borrow.

How can I borrow materials?
Unlock the door with just a swipe of your faculty ID card and feel free to borrow books and other materials, take private meetings, and unwind between classes whenever you'd like. You can return borrowed items by leaving them on the table (until we get a small library cart) so they can be reshelved. We hope to add a water cooler (and maybe even a few snacks) this semester.
I want to donate!
If you have books, magazines, or design-related DVDs that you’re ready to part with, please talk to Gail about possibly contributing to the Carin Goldberg Faculty Library.
