Additional Information
Who Should Apply to MFA Design?
For the MFA Design program at the School of Visual Arts, we are seeking visionary designers who are passionate about pushing the boundaries of design and innovation. Ideal candidates are individuals who are eager to refine their design practice, develop a distinct creative voice, tackle complex design challenges across various media and platforms, and bring their original ideas and concepts to the world. We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds, including experienced designers, emerging talents, and those from interdisciplinary fields such as technology, art, architecture, and business. Whether you have a background in graphic design, industrial design, digital media, or even fields like urban planning or sociology, if you have an intense commitment to design craft and are driven by a desire to explore new design methodologies, we encourage you to apply. Our program values both traditional and non-traditional educational paths, and a commitment to continuous learning and professional growth is essential.
What Do We Look For in Applications?
- Personal voice/style – we look for candidates that show some shared sense of their own unique voice and style cross a body of work. Even when it’s client work, they manage to marry the two, delivering what the client or audience needs while leaving their own mark.
- Personal interest/passions – we love to see when a person’s own personal interest in the who and/or what they’re designing for shows through. They’ve chosen subject matter, audiences, causes, etc that are meaningful to them
- Strong typography – we find that excellence in typography is a leading indicator of essential fundamental design skills: hierarchy, pacing, grouping, composition, editing, etc.
- Abundance – usually making and making a lot is a strong indicator for us both in work ethic and the fact that making is a practice…the more we make the more opportunities we have to learn, tune our taste, and refine our skills.
- An entrepreneurial spirit – when candidates self-initiate projects and go after putting out things into the world. This is the spirit we wish to further cultivate throughout the time
- Exploration across media – today’s designer preparing to be tomorrow’s design leader is as likely to make an app, a stage production, a book, or or branded social content. We love to see designers working freely cross forms, unintimidated by trying new things and applying their skills from one area to another
- Storytelling – we look for candidates who can create a compelling narrative in their work. They understand how to engage an audience, guiding them through their design with a clear beginning, middle, and end. This goes beyond just arranging elements—it's about creating an emotional journey that resonates and communicates effectively. Great storytellers understand pacing, tension, resolution, and how to balance information with emotion.
