Their Stone Carving

30 min

Director: Yinlin Chen

Xu Yongli is the only nationally recognized female master stone carver in her rural hometown of Qingtian, the traditional center of stone carving in China. Her husband, Ma Bing, is from Beijing but moved to Qingtian as a youth to become a master stone carver himself. Although they often make carvings together, Xu has become more renowned for her work, even though men are typically in the dominant position in society. This film offers a chance to see their collaboration and to explore the joy and sadness in Xu's life.
