The Presence of Gesture

As a street photographer, Luo wanted to take a less descriptive, more abstract approach to this essential photographic genre—to try to bring out its poetry. With the images in the Presence of Gesture, he intended to open up street photography’s hidden narratives to viewers by isolating meaningful fragments of what he sees in front of him as he shoots. Hands in these images are often suggesting the presence of humans, and they also relate to stories outside of the frame. Luo hopes that the images in the Presence of Gesture will encourage viewers to see things differently to look for the often-mysterious stories behind the scenes we take for granted.
