Heavers
26 minutes
Director: Zhaowei Hu (SocDoc Thesis Grant, SVA Alumni Scholarship)
After hundreds of years of unrelenting work, the ‘heavers’ on Mount Tai are vanishing. Mr. Wang came to work the mountain when he was 18 and decades later he still carries heavy loads up the mountain on his back for vendors to cook and resell. In the film, we discover a traditional Chinese man’s inner world and the questions that occupy him: will the heavers be replaced by modern transportation or perhaps just disappear? And what will the future bring to Mr. Wang and his family?
