Returning from a Leave of Absence
If you intend to return to SVA from an approved leave of absence, please complete the Return from Leave of Absence form. Please note that you will need to be logged in to your SVA account in order to fill out the form. We will reactivate your account and inform your academic advisor. If you are within the online registration period, a registration appointment will be assigned and you will be notified by email.
You can extend your leave of absence for up to one academic year from the last term you were in attendance. If you wish to return to SVA after being away for more than one full academic year, you must apply for re-entry with the Office of Admissions.
Independent Study
For undergraduate students in their junior and senior years, as well as students in graduate programs, independent study can provide an opportunity to study material not offered as a specific course in the SVA curriculum. Students may wish to work in an area that is beyond the scope of the courses offered or may want to take an in-depth look at a topic that was covered only briefly in a course.
Interested students with a GPA of at least 3.0 should contact their academic advisor before the beginning of the semester to discuss their ideas and learn how to apply for an independent study. Independent study courses must be approved and added before the last day of the course adjustment period. Students can register for a maximum of two independent study courses in a semester. Faculty members are limited to four independent study courses in a semester.
Once students have received approval to apply for an independent study, they may complete the request form below.

Course Listings and Course Search
Registration Policies
- Student accounts must be clear of all holds in order to register. Students who have academic, financial, or library holds may be prevented from registering.
- Faculty members cannot grant permission to students to register for a course that is closed. You may search for open courses in the Course Catalog in MyServices.
- International students cannot register for more than 3 credits of online coursework per semester. This is due to federal F-1 visa regulations.
- Avoid scheduling an online class immediately before or after a class that meets on campus, particularly if you are a commuter.
- You should choose alternative courses to add in case your first choices are closed. You can indicate your second choices on the form.
- First-year students must be registered for a full foundation block of courses. You are not able to create a schedule from multiple blocks.
Viewing Your Class Schedule
Your Current Schedule
Your current schedule is viewable on MyServices. Since many classes may have changed days and/or times, you should review your schedule to ensure that your classes do not conflict with each other. Make sure to use the Course Catalog to search for classes if you intend to adjust your schedule.
Schedule Time Display
MyServices displays course times in New York (Eastern Daylight, GMT-4) time in the Course Catalog and on your schedule. Please note this detail if you are accessing your schedule from a different time zone.
