SVA Career Development supports students and alumni in building their professional networks while providing them with the information and resources they need to prosper as creative professionals. In addition to offering educational workshops and career counseling, the office facilitates industry networking opportunities that directly connect students with professionals. Recruiters from top creative companies visit campus (in person or virtually) to meet with students, review portfolios, and promote their employment opportunities.

The office uses the 12twenty platform to manage many services and activities.

Career Development also manages the College’s Internship-for-Credit Program, allowing qualified juniors, seniors, and graduate students to earn credit while gaining hands-on experience working with creative professionals. You may also find information on Career Development’s Resources, Employer Services, and Fulbright at SVA on their respective pages.

  • For career counseling appointments, book on SVA 12twenty with your new, activated account. Refer to our Login and Profile Setup Tip Sheet and Booking Appointments Tip Sheet.

We also offer Virtual Office Hours once a week. During this time, students can drop into an open Zoom meeting with a career counselor without an appointment. The next Virtual Office Hour can be found in the Event section of SVA 12twenty.

Counseling sessions support degree-seeking students and recent graduates in exploring, identifying, and pursuing their individual career goals, while also introducing them to professional tools and resources. We can assist you with résumé, cover letter, and portfolio reviews; job search strategies; interview preparation; building a freelancing career; applying to grants, residencies, and other professional opportunities; and exhibiting your work as an artist.

    Policies

    • Appointments are for current SVA students and alumni up to four years after graduation.
    • Freshmen and sophomores must review our Resume and Cover Letter Guide before booking an appointment.
    • Our office reserves the right to reassign your appointment to a different counselor in the instance of a scheduling conflict.
    • Canceling: If you need to cancel or change your appointment, you must do so no later than 24 hours prior to your appointment time.
    • No-Shows: If you miss your appointment without canceling, you may book a new appointment at least four weeks from your original appointment date.
    • No Double-Booking: You may reserve only one appointment at a time. If you book two, one appointment will be canceled by a Career Development administrator.
  • We try to accommodate requests for a visit with your SVA class or department whenever possible, though there may be times of limited availability.

Please submit this form at least four weeks prior to the ideal date of your requested visit. We will do our best to meet your date request and will suggest other dates if necessary.

For an overview of the services provided by the Career Development office, we encourage you to share with your students our website, our Resources page, and the video recording of Coffee Chat with Career Development on our Mediaspace channel.

  • The SVA Job Board is available exclusively for SVA students and alumni on 12twenty. Simply log into your account and click "SVA Job Board" on the left-side menu to view current listings. Please email cd@sva.edu if you have any technical difficulties.

  • Career Development hosts a variety of events, from skill-based workshops, to on-campus recruiting opportunities, to special panel events and networking opportunities. Workshops cover topics such as professional networking, resume writing and interviewing, job search strategies, marketing, and managing business and legal issues for artists—just to name a few.

Professional artists and recruiters from leading creative companies participate in our annual Career Fair, student portfolio reviews, and campus visits throughout the year to share their expertise and guidance.
