You deserve better than fast furniture. This course will explore the techniques and skills of fabrication, furniture design, and introductory woodworking. Students will be trained on common woodshop machinery (table saw, bandsaw, miter saw) as well as specialty hand and power tools for furniture construction. Sketching and planning furniture projects, basic joinery techniques, and how to source sustainable materials and finishes will all be covered. For the core project of this class, each student will design and build their own furniture object out of 3/4" baltic birch plywood. No previous design or fabrication experience is required.

Note: The materials fee covers a set amount of modeling and construction materials, including chipboard, foam, plywood, screws and sandpaper. Additional materials are available for purchase. This course is held on campus in the Visible Futures Lab (VFL), a state-of-the-art rapid prototyping facility and fabrication space. Students may access the VFL facilities outside of class hours, subject to availability, and must schedule an appointment through the VFL online scheduling system. Students must be properly certified to access the machines they wish to use outside of class. VFL access ends on the last day of class.
